Southgate claims pundits make criticisms to ‘stay relevant’

As the lowest FIFA-ranked outfit in the world, San Marino struggled to deal with just about every England player on the pitch as the goals flew in at an astonishing rate.

Saka and Smith Rowe stood out particularly in the opening exchanges as seemingly every Three Lions attack came down the left flank that the Arsenal duo shared for the majority of the game.

Emile Smith Rowe celebrates his first England goal with Bukayo Saka

While 20-year-old Saka has established himself as somewhat of an England regular by this point, Smith Rowe was enjoying his first start for his country.

The performances from both were made all the more impressive after they broke long-standing England records in the process.

Saka’s header late on in the game to seal England’s tenth goal of the evening ensured the Hale End academy graduate became the youngest player to score in three consecutive starts since May 1939.

Not to be outdone, Smith Rowe ensured it was a solid night’s work for the Arsenal boys as he became the first player to both score and assist on his first England start since Rickie Lambert eight years ago.

The assist came first as the Gunners ace linked up with a north London rival in Tottenham talisman Harry Kane.

Smith Rowe’s cut-back found the England skipper who bagged the second of his four goals on the night, before the Arsenal midfielder found the net himself for England’s sixth.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has reaped the benefits of the fine form both of his academy graduates have shown so far this term, as Smith Rowe sits level on league goals scored with club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Saka and Smith Rowe have a tendency to show up when their side needs them most, as the pair both found themselves on the scoresheet for the north London derby victory earlier this season.

The rise from U-23 stars to first-team fan favourites has been meteoric for the duo, with Smith Rowe still part of the youth set-up less than 12 month ago.

Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe are both first-team regulars at Arsenal

With the Qatar World Cup looming large on the horizon, Arsenal could anticipate a number of their players in Southgate’s side.

Three Gunners stars featured in Monday night’s win at San Marino in Saka, Smith Rowe and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Arsenal’s £50m summer signing Ben White has previously appeared for his country, but was surprisingly left out of the England squad for the last round of World Cup qualifiers.
