Arsenal’s 4-0 defeat to Liverpool at the weekend emphasised the gulf in class to the Premier League’s elite and highlighted Mikel Arteta’s need to bolster his squad in January
Arsenal’s recent resurgence hit a bump in the road at the weekend as Liverpool highlighted the gulf in class at the upper end of the Premier League table with a resounding 4-0 victory.
Mikel Arteta’s men had gone 10 games unbeaten before the blip and will now be desperately seeking a response when they welcome winless Newcastle to the Emirates this Saturday lunchtime.
Despite Arsenal’s impressive run coming to an abrupt halt an Anfield, Arteta will have been encouraged by the progress his side have made since a shaky start to the season.
Seven clean sheets across those 10 outings have been largely thanks to how well the Spaniard’s summer signings have settled, with Aaron Ramsdale, Tomiyasu Takehiro and Ben White having particularly caught the eye at the back.
With January’s transfer window just around the corner, Arteta will no doubt be keen to add to the ranks and push on in an attempt to close the evident gap between his Gunners and the Premier League’s elite.
Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are both still yet to resolve contract issues too, meaning Arsenal face a crucial couple of windows as they look to build on the foundations recently constructed by Arteta.
Mirror Football has all the latest transfer gossip coming out of the Emirates…
Who do you think Arsenal should try and sign in January? Let us know in the comments section.
Moving for the next Mbappe
With the aforementioned Lacazette and Nketiah both yet to commit their futures to Arsenal and seemingly on the way out when their current deals expire next summer, Arteta will be keen for the Gunners to add some more firepower in January.
Should the pair depart, Arsenal would only be left with Aubameyang as a main striking option alongside youngsters Gabriel Martinelli and Folarin Balogun. However, that could all be set to change.
According to reports in Romania, Arsenal are interested in snapping up Ianis Stoica – the latest sensation dubbed the ‘next Mbappe’.
Playsport claim that the Gunners are looking to sign the 18-year-old from current club FSCB, formerly known as Steaua Bucharest, in January following months of scouting.
The frighteningly quick Romanian under-21 international has caught the eye having broken into the FSCB side and netted six goals in 14 appearances so far this season.
Addressing the Arsenal interest in Stoica, club owner Gigi Becali stated: “It is good that Arsenal are monitoring Ianis, but there is no point as he is not for sale. He could be in a year or two, but not yet.
“He is technically skilled, physically strong and very smart. To look at him, you’d think he is 23 years old – not 18!”
Arthur to Arsenal?

Another name being linked with a January move to the Emirates is that of Juventus midfield metronome Arthur.
The former Barcelona man moved to Turin in 2020 in a controversial swap deal, but has since seen his career stall as summer surgery has meant a spell on the sidelines and a steady reintegration this season.
However, Arthur could be set to reignite his footballing career in England with his agent reportedly pushing for a Premier League move, according to Spanish outlet El Gol Digital.
And it appears as though as Arsenal could be in the driving seat with CalcioMercato reporting that the Gunners are interested in signing the midfielder, who would cost them around £29m, in January.
The 25-year-old would be a much-needed addition to midfield with Thomas Partey away in the New Year at the African Cup of Nations with his native Ghana.
Hopes of sealing Arthur’s signature are also boosted by the Brazilian connection between the Juve man and Arsenal’s technical director Edu, who would play a key role in any negotiations.
It’s a no from Onana
While Ramsdale may have impressed since joining Arsenal in the summer, the Gunners have been linked with another shot-stopper in the form of Ajax’s Andre Onana.
The Cameroonian keeper is in the final year of his contract and has made no secret of his desire to leave Amsterdam in search of a new challenge next season.
Though Arsenal have been heavily tipped to sign him for some time now, it appears as though the 25-year-old has decided where his future lies.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Onana has turned down the opportunity to join Arsenal and is set to sign for Inter Milan instead when his current deal is up.
Despite Ramsdale’s recent heroics, the news will come as a blow to Arsenal given they could have secured the African stopper on a free transfer to cover the imminent void left by German back-up Bernd Leno, who looks set to depart the Emirates in January.
