Govt’s Intervention To Compensate Poultry Farmers Unprecedented- Agric Ministry PRO

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Food and Agriculture Ministry, Issah Alhassan has stated that the government’s intervention to compensate poultry farmers affected with the HPAI influenza is phenomenal.

He said the Poultry farmers have been crying out for long and the government has heeded their cry to compensate them.

Issah Alhassan was speaking with Oheneba Nana Asiedu on Wontumi Radio Morning Show.

According to him, Government has released about Ghc44 Million to compensate the affected farmers.

He revealed that a total of 261,157 birds were killed in 2015 and 2021 as a result of the bird flu influenza.

BACKGROUND

The HPAI is a virulent zoonotic disease easily transferrable from birds to humans.

This occurs through direct contact with infected birds, contaminated feed, fomites and interaction between
farmhands.

Historically, Ghana has experienced HPAI outbreaks in 2007, 2015 and 2018 before the current
the outbreak in 2021.

In all cases, the disease has led to high mortality of birds running into
thousands, loss of livelihoods and investments.
