Jurgen Klopp has been urged to give Curtis Jones a run in the Liverpool side after the midfielder impressed in the thrashing of Porto on Tuesday night.

Liverpool made it 14 goals in their last three meetings against Porto with a dominant 5-1 victory over the Portuguese side in the Champions League.

Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino both helped themselves to two goals, while Sadio Mane also netted as Klopp’s side ran riot at the Estadio do Dragao.

Salah opened the scoring with a poked finish after Jones’ shot was pushed out by goalkeeper Diogo Costa before Mane tapped in at the back post from James Milner’s cross to make it 2-0 at half-time.

Liverpool’s Egyptian forward collected Jones’ pass and rolled the ball under Costa on the break for 3-0 in the 60th minute.

Mehdi Taremi headed in for Porto before the away side asserted their authority once more through substitute Firmino.

He took advantage of Costa’s calamitous error by rolling the ball into an empty net from Jones’ long ball, before putting in the rebound after Jones’ speculative volley ricocheted into his path.

Jones’ creative display, which could be viewed as four assists, capped an impressive few days for the 20-year-old, who also scored in the 3-3 draw against Brentford on Saturday.

And former Liverpool striker Michael Owen believes Jones has done enough recently to earn a regular place in Klopp’s starting XI.

“Before Harvey Elliott got injured, he was the one with the shirt,” Owen said on BT Sport.

“Curtis Jones has always been around, here and there, but for his sake he needs a long run in the team. When he gets the chance he needs to do what he did tonight.”

Another ex-Liverpool striker, Peter Crouch, was in agreement on Jones’ performance.

“Curtis Jones was very impressive tonight,” he said. “He has excellent feet and was making driving runs at the right time.”

Klopp made just one change to the side which drew against Brentford, with Milner coming in for the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back.

That meant Jones’ performance against Brentford, in which he scored with a powerful strike, was enough to earn him a start in the Champions League, ahead of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Perhaps Jones being picked alongside Jordan Henderson and Fabinho in midfield should not have been a surprise, given Klopp’s praise of the youngster on Monday.

“The Brentford game is a really good example,” he told Goal . “That’s how Curtis has to play, consistently.

“He was defensively really good, he won important balls. He was offensively involved in pretty much everything, he scored a wonderful goal, and he can score exactly the same goal with his left foot too, which makes him really special.

“Play like this – and better, obviously – and everything is fine.”
