Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has explained how Jurgen Klopp’s team were able to storm into a 4-0 lead at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Portuguese forward was selected ahead of Sadio Mane for the Premier League game and helped the Reds complete a famous 5-0 victory against Manchester United.

Discussing the team’s first-half performance with Liverpool’s website, Jota said: “Sometimes things just happen naturally.

“I think we were of course on our toes, everyone was searching for the space and I think in the end with the two goals coming soon, that helps as well.

“We were very dangerous and we did a fantastic game.”

Liverpool’s domineering win was their biggest against United since September 1925 – and their biggest ever at Old Trafford.

Jota also admitted he wasn’t expecting it to be such a comfortable evening at Old Trafford – considering the talent at manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s disposal.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood all started the game for United but hardly laid a glove on Liverpool.

Jota added: “It’s hard to dream [about such a win], which is a good thing, to be honest.

“We always expect a tight game, at least in terms of the result, but I think we were outstanding today, especially until the 2-0. In the first 15 minutes we were almost perfect.

“After that, we conceded a little bit counter-attacks and started losing the ball, but in the end it’s a historical result and one for the fans to remember for a while.”

And Jota praised his team-mate Mohamed Salah, who scored a hat-trick and provided the assist for Naby Keita’s opener at Old Trafford.

The Egyptian is now the highest scoring African player in Premier League history with 107 goals, ten of which have been scored this season.

Salah’s existing Liverpool deal expires in June 2023 and it’s believed he’s after a £500,000-a-week salary, reflecting his status as one of the world’s best footballers.

Discussing Salah’s impact on the team, Jota admitted: “[It’s] massive! I think of course the way the team is playing at the moment helps a finisher like he is.

“It is one of those times when every time he touches the ball it seems to end in the back of the net! That is unbelievable for us and I hope that can continue for a while.”

Despite Liverpool’s comprehensive victory in Manchester, Jota isn’t getting carried away.

They are still one point behind Premier League leaders Chelsea and have some tricky games on the horizon, including an away trip to rivals Everton on December 1.

The Portuguese star continued: “It’s historical but we as players, we can’t think over our heads. I think it’s important that we keep our feet on the floor.

“It’s just [another] three points, there is a long way to go.”
