Arteta gives update on Nketiah’s contract negotiations with Arsenal

Mikel Arteta deserves a lot of credit for managing to bring through young players while simultaneously bedding in new signings at Arsenal this season, according to Mikael Silvestre.

Arsenal are fifth in the Premier League heading into Thursday night’s game against Manchester United.

Arteta has overseen a turnaround in form after a poor start to the season, with Liverpool the only side to beat the Gunners in the league since August.

The Arsenal manager has been faced with a balancing act, with the needs of young players like Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka and the six summer signings all on the agenda.

Former Arsenal defender Silvestre has been impressed by how Arteta has managed the squad over the past few months, saying his efforts are in keeping with the club’s philosophy which was established by Arsene Wenger.

“Bringing through youngsters is something Arsenal is known for and that’s been the way for some time,” Silvestre told 888sport .

“Their academy is successful and it makes sense to give the best players a chance, to help get the club through a difficult period.

“It’s also good for the identity of the club and for the fans. When they play for England it’s even better.”

Arteta appears to have settled on a first choice XI in recent weeks, with new signings Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nuno Tavares all playing regularly.

However, there are a few issues for the Gunners boss to deal with off the pitch, with the futures of soon-to-be-out-of-contract duo Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah yet to be resolved.

Arsenal spent around £150million to bolster their squad in the summer and Silvestre is happy with the balance available to Arteta.

“Lacazette is out of contract next summer so there is a question mark there,” he said.

“Apart from that Arsenal have all their positions covered and they are good to go in the future.

“The squad is pretty young and if they keep the core of their team for a number of years they will have a good foundation.”

Arsenal face a tricky test at Old Trafford this evening and a busy Christmas period ahead, so conclusions should not be drawn yet, but the direction of travel is promising.

“It’s still early for Arsenal because we are still in December and there were new signings. Arteta needs time to gel this team and get results,” Silvestre added.

“Competition for European places is high but he’s done well, especially when his position was being questioned.

“He focused on working every day and not listening to the noise so credit must go to him.”
