Klopp happy for Liverpool to keep playing — for now

It was another record-breaking night for Liverpool as they beat Newcastle United 3-1 on Thursday.

Mohamed Salah hit his 22nd strike of the season after Diogo Jota had equalised former Reds midfielder Jonjo Shelvey’s early effort.

Trent Alexander-Arnold made sure of the three points with a 25-yard blast but once again took the plaudits.

But despite equalling Jamie Vardy’s record of providing a goal or an assist in 15 consecutive Premier League appearances, the Egypt international was substituted by his manager Jurgen Klopp in the second half at Anfield.

Klopp has now opened up on that decision, with Match of the Day host Gary Lineker making an observation about the way Salah plays as well.

Virgil van Dijk, who missed out on the win after testing positive for Covid, has also sent a message to fans.

Van Dijk sends message

Virgil van Dijk has sent a message to his Liverpool teammates after having to watch them record the club’s 2,000th top-flight win.

The Dutchman recorded a positive Covid test just hours before the Premier League game against Newcastle kicked off.

In van Dijk’s absence, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp paired Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate as his centre-backs for the Anfield encounter.

Van Dijk has now praised his teammates following the win and made a vow about his return.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has explained his decision to substitute star man Mohamed Salah during the Reds’ 3-1 win over Newcastle.

Salah was replaced by fit-again Roberto Firmino in the 74th minute at Anfield.

With Salah seemingly in the form of his life, fans could be forgiven for being disappointed at the decision not to let the winger see out the game.

But Klopp has now opened up about the substitution, which he says was made with the busy festive period in mind.

Gary Lineker was watching Mo Salah closely against Newcastle

Gary Lineker has got Liverpool fans talking with his observation of star man Mo Salah.

Salah put in another impressive performance during the match against Newcastle,which particulalrly caught the eye of Match of the Day host Lineker.

The Match of the Day host took to Twitter to note: “Love watching Mo Salah play. Wonderfully imaginative footballer who plays with a smile on his face….then again, so would I if I was that good.”

Liverpool fans were quick to reply to the observation – many of them agreeing with the Match of the Day host.
