Mikel Arteta determined to keep focus on Arsenal’s win over Southampton

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been pictured getting a tattoo just a day before he was dropped from the Gunners matchday squad.

Aubameyang was absent for Arsenal’s comfortable 3-0 home victory over Southampton on Saturday afternoon, with manager Mikel Arteta revealing he was omitted from his side due to a “disciplinary breach”.

Twenty-four hours before kick-off in north London, the forward’s regular tattoo artist Alejandro Nicolas Berna took to Instagram to upload a snap of him inking the Arsenal star’s forearm.

Reports claimed Aubameyang was given permission to travel abroad but returned later than requested, though Arteta remained coy over his reasoning behind the decision to drop his skipper.

Ahead of kick-off, Arteta was pressed on why there was no Aubameyang in his starting eleven.

“Unfortunately due to a disciplinary breach,” the Spaniard revealed.

“I think we have been very consistent that we have certain non-negotiables in the team that we have set ourselves as a club, and he’s not involved today.”

Speculation only increased over the length of time Aubameyang can expect to be punished, with Arteta refusing to disclose how long he will be out for, instead claiming: “It starts today.”

Unfortunately, this is not the first time Arteta has been forced to take action over the conduct of his captain.

Aubameyang was dropped to the bench for the north London derby back in March of this year, with reports suggesting the Gabon international had arrived late to the team’s pre-match meeting.

He spent the entirety of that clash watching on from the substitutes bench, though this time around he was not selected as part of the 18-member match-day squad.

Just a month prior to the incident before the Spurs contest, Aubameyang’s love of body art got him in hot water again after he is alleged to have broke lockdown rules to get another tattoo.

Though it was not determined whether his artist was part of his Covid bubble, an Arsenal spokesperson said at the time: “We will speak to the player to remind him of his responsibilities and establish what has taken place.”

Arsenal’s highest earner has been in dire form in recent weeks, hauled off as the Gunners searched for a goal away at Manchester United before being dropped for the 2-1 defeat by Everton.

That decision seemed like a tactical one, while his absence against the Saints was all of his own making.

Arteta is famed for his disciplinarian approach, citing his ‘non-negotiables’ that every member of the Arsenal side must adhere if they are to stand a chance of playing under the former Manchester City assistant.
