Real Madrid fans have very little respect for PSG. This past summer, PSG’s leadership made statement after statement about Kylian Mbappe. They said that he would neither be sold, nor would be allowed to go for free. PSG’s ultra-rich, powerful ownership looked completely classless in making veiled threats and speaking half-truths about the iconic Parisian. So much so that Mbappe had to give an honest interview with RMC Sport to clear the air.
Mbappe made it clear to PSG that he wanted to leave. Real Madrid made it clear they wanted him, too, and were willing to spend a massive transfer fee to get him as opposed to waiting one year to sign him for free. Yet PSG “pocket rejected” a reported 200 million euro bid, as they never responded back to Los Blancos.
It is rare to see a player handle everything appropriately, give everything to a club, wait until one year before their contract runs out, and still not get the transfer they have requested. Such a situation essentially never happens to superstar players, yet the Ligue 1 giants broke this unwritten rule this summer.
And there will be consequences. Star players with aspirations of becoming global superstars will note how PSG, a sportswashing club with bottomless financial resources, can treat them without any regard. PSG are above reproach – or, at least, they believe they are – and will wield that money as a means of power.
Xavi Simons could leave PSG for free, too
Already, though, there appears to be one prospect who is uninterested in playing along with the club. Though others before him – such as Neymar, Adrien Rabiot, and Marco Verratti – have tried to orchestrate moves earlier in their career to no avail, Xavi Simons has a key advantage. Like Mbappe, his contract runs out after the season ends. So PSG can do nothing if he wants to leave.
Fabrizio Romano reports that the Manchester City and Barcelona-linked midfield prospect is seriously considering leaving Paris when his contract runs out. Romano says clubs in Spain and Germany are monitoring the 18-year-old’s situation.
He previously reported that Simons has not responded to a contract renewal offer from PSG that has been on the table since June. It’s a power move, but it’s not a surprising one when you realize that his agent is Mino Raiola. Simons is one of the most promising prospects in football, and Raiola knows what his client is capable of. If PSG don’t offer Simons what he wants and a role that will help him progress, he will use his other options to get his client first-team football.
We are seeing a young prospect with ambition and his powerful agent leverage themselves against PSG. Either get serious about giving us what we want – which is more important than just money- or we will sign with any number of other teams prepared to meet our expectations.
Erling Haaland links to PSG have become sparse
PSG has a lot of money and power, but contracts still matter. And we’re going to see more players avoid succumbing to the pressure of renewing with PSG, as they will value other things, including their own peace of mind, more than the cash. Mbappe has set the trend in that regard.
Note how when it comes to Erling Haaland, PSG are mentioned in comparatively few rumors. Most people have Real Madrid and Premier League clubs in the race for one of the two biggest rising stars in the sport. The other, Mbappe, is already essentially a lock to leave for Madrid.

Simons is the latest example of a player who is not smitten with the idea of representing PSG when he doesn’t feel valued by the club. It is a club that puts money, branding, and established names ahead of what would build a successful project for the future. Their treatment of Mbappe was yet another example of their short-sighted nature, and that mentality will haunt them as the ramifications of the Mbappe saga begin to unfold.
