We are here to decide which tribe or region in Ghana produces the best Kente in Ghana
The kente cloth is called ” nwentoma ” which means ” weaving patterns.” by the Ashanti / Akan. The Kente loincloth began to be produced and worn in the Ashanti region years past, after the king who was on the throne during that time sent weavers from the Ashanti region to the Ivory Coast to learn how to weave it. On their return, the weavers began to weave the kente cloth according to differents patterns inspired by objects, persons, and traditions.
The Kente cloth began to be produced in the volta region of Ghana, several years ago after the Ashanti region, in the village called “Agbotime “. Although the techniques and the materials of its production are the same, the patterns according to which the loincloths are made, differ from those of the Ashanti region. The difference is due to the culture and traditions of the volta region which is different, from those of the Ashanti region. Every year, the Agbotime traditional area celebrates the festival of kente cloth.
The Kente cloth from the northern region is more recent than those of the Ashanti and Volta regions. It’s a replica of the Ashanti and Volta regions kente in the material. But its patterns and colors differ from those of the two other regions. Like the two other regions, the northern kente is made according to patterns inspired by objects, persons, and traditions of their region.
