You’re Not Obeying Constitution – Deputy Minority Leader Slams Gbajabiamila

The Deputy Minority Leader, Toby Okechukwu, lashed out at the Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives for having no regard for the law on defection.

Okechukwu lashed out at the Speaker of not obeying section 68 of the 1999 Constitution as he touched on the defection of members of he Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The speaker, on the other hand, scolded him, warning that being acknowledged to speak is a privilege. He goes on to say that interpreting is a task for the judiciary, not him. Gbajabiamila advised the PDP to file suit through the courts to settle the matter.

“Being a person whose election to the House was sponsored by a political party, he becomes a member of another political party before the expiration of the period for which that House was elected; Provided that his membership of the latter political party is not as a result of a division in the political party of which he was previously a member or of a merger of two or more political parties or factions by one of which he was previously sponsored.”.

Meanwhle, Femi Gbajabiamila recently intimated that he would not support any legislation that aimed to stifle the press.

Gbajabiamila made his submission at a program dubbed “Recognising Good Governance and Legislative Excellence in the Face of Adversity,” in Abuja. He categorically stated that he is in support of the media and he has no ill intentions against the media. He explained that freedom of expression is limited to the extent that it does not affect another person’s freedom.
